It is a powerful and emotional symbol of inspiration and one that all Kiwis can relate to. The top of the leaf is green, but the back or underside is a magnificent and unique silvery white. To grow these, fill a seed tray with seed raising mix. Press the mix firmly into the tray; water and allow to drain. Spread spores evenly over mix and press firmly to make good contact with soil. Place tray in a warm, shady, sheltered place and mist with water, as required, to keep moist (not wet). Ferns like moist environments so do not allow the mix to dry out. Once the seedlings are 3-5cm high, transplant them into small individual pots. Grow on until a root ball establishes and transplant into the garden or containers.
